Laser discectomy

Laser discectomy was invented by Dr. Daniel S.J. Choy of Columbia University in New York, NY over 20 years ago. Laser discectomy is performed through a needle with no cutting or surgical tissue injury to worry about. Laser discectomy works via a similar mechanism as disc treatment with the enzyme chymopapain (pronounced “ky-mo-papane”) which has been proven effective vs. placebo in FDA-sponsored randomized, controlled, clinical trials (RCT’s). While chymopapain is no longer available in the United States, it is still used successfully around the world. At Synergy Spine Center, laser discectomy is used to treat the painful disc or small (< 3mm) disc herniations directly, and can take the place of spinal fusion or long term drug therapy in many patients.
